Displaced migrants leave the country after xenophobic violence erupted some parts of South Africa.

Displaced migrants leave the country after xenophobic violence erupted some parts of South Africa.   By: Mohamed Kosow Salat Displaced migrants are leaving the country after xenophobic violence erupted in West Cape province. The foreign nationals mainly from the continent are seen leaving the country through the land border and some are still stranded in some parts of the country where the xenophobic attacks happened. According to the Border Management Authority, approximately 600 Mozambican nationals fled Mossel Bay and returned to their home country in the aftermath of the violence. Nearly a week after the incidents, around 100 foreign nationals from neighboring countries, including Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, were reported to be stranded in a community hall in Mossel Bay, with their belongings, under police protection. The government has issued a warning to the public that any individual found guilty of violently attacking African migrants will face the full force of ...

Misunderstanding Between Somalis and South Africans Over the Use of the Coat of Arms and the Chairperson Election.

Misunderstanding Between Somalis and South Africans Over the Use of the Coat of Arms and the Chairperson Election. Written by: Mohamed Kosow Salat In Johannesburg two days ago there was an election in the Somali community to elect a new community chairperson. Many South Africans misunderstood the event and thought that the Somali community was crowning a king in South Africa.  Some believed that this was against the South African Constitution as foreign nationals may not establish traditional leadership structures in the country. The controversy was heightened when the event’s organizers used the South African flag and the national Coat of Arms on posters and event material. This sparked a huge debate on social media platforms, especially TikTok where many people criticized the event and asked why South African national symbols were being used. Tensions boiled over as anti-migrant groups, particularly those targeting African migrants, gathered outside the Somali embassy in P...
Uncertainty and Tension as Ethiopian and Somali Business Ties Strain in Port Elizabeth. By Mohamed Kosow Salat  For years, Somali-owned wholesale stores in Korsten have supported hundreds of Ethiopian and Somali spaza shop owners in Port Elizabeth’s informal settlements. This long-standing business relationship is now under strain.  Earlier this week, the Ethiopian Business Committee in Port Elizabeth warned Ethiopian shop owners to stop buying from Somali qowned wholesalers in Korsten. The message spread quickly through informal trading networks, leaving many Ethiopian business owners confused and anxious.  "I don’t understand why this decision was made,” said one Ethiopian spaza shop owner, who asked to remain anonymous. “The Somali wholesalers are our main suppliers. Without them, our businesses cannot survive." The committee has not publicly explained why they issued the warning. This lack of information adds to the uncertainty about how long the boycott may la...

Recognition without legitimacy the Somaliland dilemma

By Mohamed Kosow Salat  I don't think that Israel's recognition of Somaliland as an independent state would help Somaliland to carrying out its mission to be fully recognized by the international community. it does  not guarantee widespread international recognition  or change Somaliland's status overnight.Howevwr with the bad image of Natenyahu perceived by many Somalis and the world in general this recognition will ignite violence and regional destabilization which will lead terrorist groups to intesify their mission in Somalia. On 21 October 2024 following an investigation of war crimes and crime against humanity, the international criminal cours (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Isreal's prime Minister. Natenyahu  has massively slaughtered the feeble Palestinian children, elderly people and destroyed the infrastructure of Palestinians. He subjected them to die from malnutrition aftet he blocked the aid agencies to rich Gaza. Isreal's recognition of...

Somali Businessmen Selling Their Spaza Shops to Ethiopians in the Eastern Cape Raise Concerns

Concern has been raised by a growing trend among Somali businessmen in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.  In the province, a large number of Somali business owners who run spaza shops are purposefully selling their small-scale businesses to Ethiopian traders. Although the deals are frequently lucrative, Somali wholesalers in Port Elizabeth are concerned and anxious about this change.  The sustainability of Somali-owned wholesale companies that have long provided these spaza shops with their goods may be seriously impacted by this wave of "entrepreneurial eradication", according to community leaders.  According to reports, Ethiopians are encouraging young Somali shop owners in South Africa who lack long-term business plans to sell their businesses, offering them generous payments. This development has prompted inquiries. This new trend of eradicating Somali businesses in the Eastern Cape and its surroundings can cause both families and businesses owned by Somalis ...

White Flight or Preferential Refuge? The Controversial Exodus of Afrikaners to America

Written by Mohamed Kosow Salat  A group of white South Africans, recently granted special refugee status by the Trump administration, left OR Tambo International Airport last night. The South African government has pushed back on their claims, saying these individuals don't qualify as refugees. According to international standards, refugee status is reserved for people who are forced to flee their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political beliefs, or association with a particular social group. However, members of this group—many of them Boers—say they’ve been living under constant threat. They point to a rise in violent farm attacks, sexual assaults, and a growing sense of insecurity as the reasons behind their decision to leave. What’s raised eyebrows is the Trump administration’s decision to make an exception for them, despite its otherwise tough stance on immigration. In the same period, the U.S. restricted refug...

Breaking the barriers: Government should simplify spaza shops businesses registration process.

Breaking the barriers: Government should simplify spaza shops business registration process.  By: Mohamed kosow Salat.  The government is giving undue stress to foreign nationals through the stringent registration requirements of spaza shops in townships.  In fact, although the president gave a directive to register within 21 days, the conditions have turned out to be a massive hurdle. Shop owners are required to have a business visa or work permit. In turn, the requirements for these are an investment of R5 million into a business or submitting a detailed business plan. Secondly, another issue is zoning, since many spaza shops are run from informal structures such as Mandela houses. The registration conditions should be relaxed to favor such microbusinesses. This includes adjusting zoning regulations and making available necessary equipment, such as sanitation facilities and fire extinguishers, at reasonable costs. The local municipality can also go a long way in ass...
